Ella no conoce a Jeremy y a Gaelle.

!!!! Qué pensará Jeremy si me pierdo o abandono?

TRANSKARUKERA, the other face of the races.
I did the chronicle of this race in my blog.
But this time I’m going to tell an unexpected beautiful and emotional story. Those things that make you fall in love with that person every day more.
I was invited to this race. But I wanted to go with my partner (Nary). So I sent the curriculum of Nary (very short) and then she was invited as well. In advance, I was excited about this opportunity offered to us. I would do the Ultra Trail race (130km) while Nary will run the Red Mamnel race (65km)
My race starts on Friday at 8 pm accompanied by Nary and the cameraman Thomas who was also invited to the starting line. Before the start, Gerard Augusty, the organizer took Nary aside for asking a favor. Jeremy husband of Gaelle could not come to Guadeloupe as planned to participate to the Red Mamnel because Gaelle just passed away one week before. So, if she didn’t mind to wear on top of her bib, the one with Jeremy & Gaelle names #207. Without any hesitation and touched by the sad news, she accepted with honor the task. Jeremy is French from the metropolis (main land) but lived in Guadeloupe until his wife was seriously ill and they have to sick treatment in the main land. Jeremy Knows the difficulty of the Red Mamnel path as he used to train on that path during the day time and wanted to dedicate this race to Gaelle. His wife and their two children were already delighted and were looking forward to follow and cheer him at different checkpoints of the Red Mamnel. When, Jeremy announced the bad news to Gerard, Gerard came up with this great and symbolic idea of making a bid with Jeremy&Gaelle names and entrusted Nary the mission of carrying the bid to the finish line…
Nary felt a strong emotion, deeply touched and honored to be chosen for this task! Just after, Nary started to realize the extra pressure and responsibility; she was putting to herself by accepting this mission! For Nary, it meant to accomplish the race safely well and reach the finish line! So, that meant to finish the 65Km of the Red Mamnel and no giving up option!

From Friday evening to her starting time on Saturday evening 7:00pm, Nary got plenty of time to wonder: “why me? Nary?” and, worrisome and stressed even more herself! She doesn’t know Jeremy & Gaelle. To understand her state of mind, here is depicted briefly the picture and environment that she is currently living and involving. Nary has never been in Guadeloupe beforehand, she never run in such an accidental terrain neither in a tropical jungle! This is her first time and I wanted her to attempt this new running adventure! During this race, she is going to run mostly alone because of a very few number of participants and at night in a very dense forest of the Caribbean’s mountains (Basse Terre), sprinkling with brambles, thorns and July is in the rainy season, so you can’t avoid some thick mud, slippery sections on the course with steep descents and vertical walls to climb… on top of that running in a mountain is a new discovery for a Cambodian road runner who have to learn to control her fear especially while running down the mountains…!!!

Comes Saturday 7:00PM, the start of the 65Km event at le col du Red Mamnels (at the passing of the Red Mammal mountains). Just at this moment, Nary discovered that she has to carry not only the bib but also the geolocalisator of Jeremy&Gaelle. Each one weights about 300 grams? So, Jeremy in France can follow in real time the progression of the race.

Before the start, Gerard gave a praising introduction of Nary about her engagement in running and being the fastest female of Cambodia, her native country. Everyone was congratulating, applauding and taking picture with Nary like a Super Star and think that she will be the winner of the event…

Nary: “I was embarrassed about the sudden fame provided by most of the participants! I decided to clarify the situation by reassuring them that maybe I’m a fast runner but only on asphalt and not on the mountains.

Also, this is my first time in Guadeloupe and I didn’t see the course which is renowned to be very tough and accidental with less than 50% finisher…in this Caribbean jungle and mountains!”
This is true, her experience in mountain running started only since January 2015 and she still need more practice and dominate her fear of running down the hill…!
The 130Km runners have passed on the 65Km course during the day time and I saw the very technical parts very steep, muddy descents and vertical walls to climb… and I was worried that she will not overcome the level of this difficulty that she has to face!
At that time, if I could call her, I will tell her not to run!!!  But, at the same time I know Nary, she will put first safety and will not put her life in danger. Also, as she will run during the night, she will not see the whole accidental surrounding and she may overcome the fear easier.
Before the race started, Gerard asked everyone to observe a minute’s silence under the red light for Jeremy and Gaelle. When, the starting time is given most of the runners started very fast and Nary was in the middle of the pack…

Nary: “ after few meters, I started to feel under my shoes the thick mud getting deeper and deeper… until I lost my left shoe inside of the thick mud! The adrenaline was getting higher; I started to be upset with myself and trying hard to extract my shoe from the mud while runners are passing me! In order to get my shoe back, I had to put my two feet into the mud and use both hands to pull it out! After, putting my foot full of mud into the shoe and put the lace, I was left alone in the silent darkness of the tropical jungle! A feeling of panic started to rise up but I decided to carry on until I caught two runners and stay in their company for a short time because I needed to speed up my pace and then I started to walk faster and run wherever I can but after a while, I did not see any reflecting mark on the ground or on the trees…

I thought that I was lost! I stopped and looked back to seek the previous two runners! A new feeling of panic rose again at this time, I’m lost! I called them and then wait a moment by hoping they will response or frontal lamplight appears then nothing and I called again but in vain! A lot of thoughts came out and shame… because now, in which situation, am I? Gerard just gave a very praising introduction and participants thought that I was a great runner and now I’m the last, alone in the middle of nowhere! Oh, my god! What a comic and dramatic situation, am I?!!!! What Jeremy will think, if I get lost or gave up? Why Gerard asked me this favor? Oh, my spirit was very down, desperate… and I wanted to cry or scream to get out my interior pain!!!

But, at the same I was pretty sure that I didn’t see any other path that I could miss! What, should I do, so desperate! Then, I recalled my friend Roberto’s advice to use all my sense, so I put the trust on myself, logic and calm down to think better as the path was big maybe the logic wants that we keep following the unique path so no need reflecting mark? Anyway, there is nothing to loose by continuing and see where this path will bring me?”

It’s true that there is a lack of marks, especially when we were running twenty minutes or two to three kilometers and we didn’t see a mark, we started to worry of missing a turn or get lost and what will be the big disappointment if we have to turn around...? Better not to think about it!  That will be a tragedy!

After running a few Km, Nary perceived a bulk of small lights ahead and closer she get she started to hear people talking then a big relief she felt at this moment! Participants were slowing down because after a fast pace at the beginning for the first few Km but also they reached the technical part with steep up and down!

Nary, stick with for a moment to catch up her breath and explained her misery to some of them…
After regaining some energy, she starts to move forwards faster and whenever she can, she will pass until runner and counting the number of women passed to be on the top 3 over 7. Easily, she reached the last woman and from there she passed each other at their best opportunity. For Nary, when it’s flat or up hill on asphalt then for this other going down in technical part.
After leaving Sofaia checkpoint (105Km), Nary started to feel the safer and close to the podium. From the Lamentin checkpoint (117Km), the course was flat, the sunrise and Nary felt relieved, full of joy and hope to be top 1st woman… she spread her joy of running along the way and water stations until she reached the finish line! Medical doctor and volunteers of Transka couldn’t believe to positive energy that she still has left after 65Km while others are completely exhausted…! She was so excited to get the mission accomplished!
Nary: “from the Lamentin checkpoint, I started to feel a joy growing from inside at the same time the sun rose. I wanted to delight this joy and happiness that I almost didn’t want to finish! Jeremy and Gaelle spirits were along the way in my mind and I was talking out loud to them from time to time because I encountered difficult parts, felt lonely or felt tired! “

Every staff at all checkpoints didn’t know Jeremy and Gaelle, because they were wondering why Nary had two bibs? Gerard didn’t have time to inform the staff about this symbolic bib, so Nary has to explain at each checkpoint who are Jeremy and Gaelle, Gerard idea and her mission.

At the last checkpoint Baie Mahault, she was warmly welcome by Gerard who is as much as Nary excited about her accomplishment in the mission and they even took pictures together to send to Jeremy by email when Nary left his checkpoint. She enjoyed every moment and steps captured memorable souvenirs such as crossing the salty river by Kayak…

She took her time to take out from the bottom her smartphone and asked the guard to make pictures and stopping at all checkpoints to give high five, to eat, to drink and joke…! She finished the race within 13h50.

I’m very happy and very proud of Nary. I knew she would get it. Moreover, I knew she was going to be on the podium. And even more, if she had run faster (she can do it), she could run less than 12 hours without any problem. Nary likes to run and explore new area and nature but also the curiosity of challenging herself and enrich her thirst of adventures without putting her life endanger. Simply, she just likes and spray the joy of running and wellbeing and that is one of the things that what I like the most...
What I will remember the most of this race, what I like the most of Nary is as good as she is, the beautiful heart she has. At the awards ceremony, spontaneously she dedicated and asked to Gerard send the trophy and the finisher T-shirt to Jeremy in memory of Gaelle.
Since then, Jeremy and family of Gaelle have had some strong and very emotional exchange mails with Nary. You can imagine the content, and the excitement you feel when you read something like this. This was the best prize and the best reward of this race. I LOVE YOU BABE
